Theory on the Possible Etiology of Autism Spectrum Disorder 
Explain and discuss at least one theory on the possible etiology (cause) of ASD
There is currently no single accepted cause of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), but medical scholars have developed some theories to explain it. One of the theories is based on genetics. ASD is considered a highly hereditary and complex genetic disorder. Statistics show that genetics play a significant role in ASD etiology but does not explain the recent increase in diagnoses. Sauer et al. (2021) argue that a family with a child who has ASD has a high chance that the siblings will also develop the disorder. Similarly, there is a high possibility for one twin to develop autism if the other one has the condition. However, this trend is rare in non-identical twins. According to Sauer et al. (2021), genetic causes can be identified in common and rare genetic variations, de novo mutations and ASD-associated common polymorphism in between 20 and 25 % of adults and children with ASD.
