Screening and Assessment are important in detecting a potential problem and seeking and applying solutions to alleviate the problem. Screening has a 'yes' or 'no' outcome, while Assessment defines the nature and features of the problem, determines a diagnosis, and develops treatment solutions to address the problem. The essay will examine a screening test (Alcohol dependence scale (ADS)) and an assessment test (American Society of Addiction Medicine- Patient Placement Criteria (ASAM PPC)).
ADS
ADS is used in screening for alcohol use disorders (AUD). It assesses several features of AUD, such as withdrawal symptoms, excessive and compulsive drinking, and alcohol tolerance (SAMHSA, 2019). The ADS is highly effective and has several positive features. First, it is brief, and specialized training is not a necessity to administer it. Secondly, it is the most effective screening tool in detecting moderate to severe alcohol use levels. Finally, its cut-off points show the presence of an AUD and the necessary treatment (SAMHSA, 2019). However, there are a few concerns over the ADS, including its limitation on only screening alcohol use issues.
