Literature Review on Sleep Problems in Children with ADHD

Essay Instructions:

Now that you have identified a behavior, population, and setting, you will start to review the literature related to that behavior. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is an evidence-based practice, which means it's important for practitioners to identify and recommend treatments that are based on evidence from research. This literature review will help you to identify research to support your decisions in later sections when writing your hypothetical behavior analytic study.
Preparation
Use the Capella Library to locate four recent (within the past 5–7 years) behavior analytic, single-subject design articles related to the behavior you selected in the last assignment.
Review the Literature Review Template [DOCX], which you will use to complete your assignment.
If you need help using the Capella library, review the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) Research Guide.
Instructions
Complete a literature review to support your hypothetical behavior analytic study.
-Provide the APA citations of the studies you found.
-Identify the dependent variable in each study.
-This should be your selected targeted behavior.
-Describe the implementation of the independent variable.
-This should be the intervention or interventions used.
-Identify the single-subject design in each study.
-Describe the data collection procedure and interobserver agreement (IOA) method used.
-Describe the internal, external, and social validity of each study.
-Describe the conclusions to each study, including the effectiveness of the interventions.
-These are the elements you will be writing for your hypothetical behavior analytic study, so it is important to pay attention to the details so that you understand how to write and structure your assignments.
Note: Put the information from each article into your own words rather than using direct quotes from the literature.

Hiscock, H., Mulraney, M., Heussler, H., Rinehart, N., Schuster, T., Grobler, A. C., ... & Sciberras, E. (2019). Impact of a behavioral intervention, delivered by pediatricians or psychologists, on sleep problems in children with ADHD: a cluster‐randomized, translational trial. Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, 60(11), 1230-1241. https://doi.org/10.1111/jcpp.13083

Dependent Variable
The sleeping problem of children with ADHD is the study’s dependent variable. The care determines the occurrence and severity of a child’s sleeping problem they receive (Hiscock et al., 2019).

Independent Variable
The independent variable in the study is the behavioral intervention administered by pediatricians or psychologists (Hiscock et al., 2019). The intervention entails two consultations with pediatricians or psychologists regarding the children’s sleep habits and behavioral strategies relevant and personalized according to their needs.

Single-Subject Design
The alternating treatment design is used in the study. The researcher compared two methods for mitigating the risks of sleep problems among children with ADHD (Hiscock et al., 2019).

Data Collection Procedure and Interobserver Agreement Method
The researchers approached 84 pediatricians who agreed to take part in the study. The pediatricians then suggested 56 psychologists who had been trained to deliver the intervention. The psychologists agreed to keep all information confidential and signed a memorandum of understanding (Hiscock et al., 2019).
Furthermore, with the assistance of the participating pediatricians, they identify which families have a child who meets all the study requirements. These families were sent an invitation letter and asked to contact their pediatricians if they did not want to participate. On the other hand, those who wanted to participate returned the consent letter and were contacted by the researchers (Hiscock et al., 2019).

Validity
The researchers demonstrate that clinician-administered interventions can alleviate sleeping problems. Furthermore, if no intervention is administered, there is no other possible cause for a child’s change in sleeping problem. The outcome is also applicable in real-world situations. Furthermore, the intervention can only be used on children up to a certain age. The intervention for other age groups may differ (Hiscock et al., 2019).

Conclusions
Children with ADHD and sleeping problems can benefit from a low-cost brief behavioral sleep intervention. An intervention does need to be costly; thus, it must aim to be cheap so that more patients can afford it. Moreover, if an intervention is low-cost, it can also be administered to more patients. The intervention effectively improves sleep problems when administered by community clinicians (Hiscock et al., 2019).
