Assignment: The Relevance of Health Psychology For this assignment, you will write an essay that describes the specific ways in which this course has contributed to your development of the knowledge and skills needed to provide patient-centered care in your future profession. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), the ability to provide patient-centered care is one of the five core competencies expected of all health professionals. According to the IOM, the ability to provide patient-centered care includes the abilities to: identify, respect, and care about patients' differences, values, preferences, and expressed needs; listen to, clearly inform, communicate with, and educate patients; share decision making and management; and continuously advocate disease prevention, wellness, and promotion of healthy lifestyles, including a focus on population health. For this assignment, you will write an essay that describes the specific ways in which this course has contributed to the knowledge and skills you will need as a health professional to provide patient-centered care. If you don't plan to pursue a career that includes direct patient contact, you will write an essay to describe the knowledge and skills you have gained through this course that you might use in the future in some other role you might take on (e.g., as a healthcare manager, patient, parent; write about one role only). Your essay will include: • An introductory paragraph that o tells the reader what the essay is about o includes the IOM definition of patient-centered care (in your own words; do not quote) o identifies your future healthcare profession (or the role on which you will focus your essay) • At least three different concepts from class (you are not limited to the topics discussed in the last three weeks of the semester). • A separate paragraph for each concept that includes o the concept o a brief explanation of the concept (in your own words) o the connection between the concept and at least one of the four parts of the IOM definition of patient-centered care o how you might use this concept in the future in the role you chose • A concluding paragraph. Because your knowledge about most of the concepts you learned in class come from the readings, class lectures, and videos shown in class, you must cite your readings, the lectures and videos in your paper. Please note that APA-style writing does not include quotations. Rather than quote authors' exact words, you are expected to use your own words. I want to see that you understand the concepts and the best way to demonstrate this is to use your own words. The rubric reflects this expectation. Also note that APA-style writing refers to articles and books by the authors' last names and not by article or book titles. This means you should not include titles to readings within your essay. For instructions for APA in-text citations, click here. A grading rubric will be posted to Blackboard so that you can see how I will evaluate your assignment. How to submit your assignment: Please submit your assignment to turnitin through Blackboard. You must also submit a hard copy of your assignment to me at the beginning of class on the date it is due. Please format your assignment as follows. Failure to follow these instructions might lead to deductions: o Put your name and the course number (BEH 250) at the top of the page (do not create a separate cover page) o Number your pages (position the page number at the top right corner) o Use 1-inch margins o Use 12-point Arial font o Use 1.5 spacing o Indent the start of each paragraph o Do not include extra spaces between paragraphs Note: Please be concise. I expect that most papers will be approximately 3 pages long. Please let me know if you have any questions!

The Relevance of Health Psychology
The health psychology course has enabled me to learn various vital things that will help me to be the best health professional in the future. Some of the concepts obtained are relevant to everyone since, at some point in life, one requires medical attention. As such, the course makes an individual understand what one should do when interacting with health professionals to ensure that they know a person’s health condition so that they can suggest the most appropriate treatment. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) defines patient-centered care as the provision of responsive and respectful care based on an individual’s values, needs, and preferences. In addition, it ensures that the values of sick people are the guide to clinical decisions. As a future therapist, the IOM core competencies discussed in the health psychology course will enable me to provide high-quality patient care.
The most significant concept obtained from the health psychology course is patient respect. Respect refers to the positive feeling or deep admiration portrayed by health professionals toward ill people. In particular, it makes sick individuals transparent to therapists since it initiates the development of a trusting relationship. Based on the IOM definition of patient-centered care, it is clear that respect involves recognizing and appreciating patients’ needs, preferences, values, and differences. For this reason, the caregiver handles the sick person well regardless of his or her cultural beliefs since the primary focus is on enhancing patient care. Keith Petrie and John Weinman (2012) argue that health professionals influence the patient’s perceptions of the disease. For this reason, treating ill individuals with respect raises their level of self-esteem, hence hastening their recovery process (Petrie & Weinman, 2012). Consequently, I will use this concept in my future role as a therapist to ensure that patients feel better about themselves.
Listening actively is another concept emphasized by IOM’s patient-oriented care. Apparently, therapists cannot determine the health problem of individuals without interacting with them. When a patient visits a hospital, he or she meets the doctor and shares his or her feelings. Indeed, it is from that description that the physician suggests the next step. Without listening to the patient keenly, a caregiver cannot understand various challenges that might hinder the patient from healing. The IOM recommends that health professionals should communicate, educate, and inform their patients (Sarafino & Smith, 2014). However, none of the above roles can be successful without listening to the sick individual carefully. The vital thing about this concept is that it applies even in the classroom. A student cannot understand various concepts discussed by the lecture without paying attention. As a result, listening will help me as a caregive...
