Emergent literacy is an idea proposing that the acquisition of literacy should be defined as a development continuum from early childhood as opposed to an all-or-none phenomenon measured when a child begins school. It consists of knowledge, skills and attitudes that can only be described as precursors necessary for development of reading and writing. This article restricts itself to the conventional form of literacy namely the reading and writing of alphabetical texts.
Traditional approaches focused on formal instructions necessary for a child to read and write by treating writing secondary to reading.
