Pain is described as an uncomfortable feeling in a particular part of the body and it signifies that there’s something wrong. To perceive pain, it involves a combination of complex factors which may be biological, social and psychological factors. In the history of medicine there several theories that have been developed to explain how and why people experience pain.
One of the theories that has been developed and has brought about a significant debate and interest is the gate control theory. This theory was proposed by Melzack stating that for one to feel and process pain it is first transmitted by nerve fibers to the spinal cord via the dorsal horn then through impulse transmission it is taken to the brain cells (Gurung, 2019).
