Many scientists, mathematicians, and engineers among others have invented new ways, devices or technologies in the fields of science and engineering. One such person was Mildred Dresselhaus (Queen of Carbon Science) whom unpopularity of discoveries in carbon science and engineering fields paved her way to discover nanometer-scale carbon sheets, carbon wires, switches, lattices, graphene, and buckminsterfullerene. She was born in Bronx, New York in 1930 and became a pioneer in solid state electronics. She was the Professor of Physics and Electrical Engineering at Emeritus Institute until her death in February 2017. Before the current position, Dr. Dresselhaus was the Director of the Office of Science at the US Department of Energy (DOE) between 2000 and 2001 (Engineering and Technology History, 2017). Professor Dresselhaus started her career at the Lincoln Laboratory as a researcher on superconductivity before she switched to magneto-optics on semi-metals and graphite. Her tremendous work that is currently used in the energy sector and engineering especially the ability of the graphite to increase energy storage capacities in batteries and capacitors, fuel, production of light and ensuring the durability of materials is pegged on her love for science and engineering. In regards to her work, the essay elaborates the importance of the fields of science and engineering in her inventions.
The Scientific field provides carbon which forms the basis of life. This is a common element that comprises. Studies of carbon have led to the invention of fullerenes and graphene which has been successful in nano-science. The various elements that have been discovered include low-dimensional carbon forms including 0D fullerenes, 1D Nanotubes and 2D graphene (Smalley, 2010). Thus, carbon chemistry has been of tremendous help to Professor Dresselhaus. She has delved in experiments using buckyballs that are made of carbon atoms. She was able to modify these carbon atoms such as pulling them out into tubules and filling them with lead to deriving new properties of containing high-temperature super-conductivities. Besides, she was able to make soot and fullerenes to develop products. On a similar version, the Science of Fullerenes and Nanotubes provides materials that Professor Dresselhaus used to invent energy storage capacities in battery technology and super-capacitors, fuel production carbon sheets, carbon wires, switches, lattices, graphene, and buckminsterfullerene (Anderson, 2015).
