Forensic psychology is one of the fields, which entails a combination of the law and practice of psychology. The employees in the field utilize psychological expertise in the criminal justice system. The American Board of forensic psychology recognizes that the field involves the application of psychology on issues of the legal system. Arguably, the interest in forensic psychology has surged over recent years because of television programs, such as “Criminal Minds.” In the show, criminal profilers depict an outstanding physic capability in revealing elaborate personality and behavioral descriptions of various perpetrators. However, the depiction is a misconception of the role of psychologists, thus confusing forensic psychologists.
Literature Review
Forensic psychologists play a significant role in promoting the welfare of criminals and enhancing adherence to the set of laws and regulations. According to Roesch and Zapf (2016), professionals support behavioral research in a courtroom. Besides, they advocate for criminal justice in judicial determinations. The media depicts forensic psychologists working collaboratively with investigators in real-life scenarios. School administrators, mental health facilities, city planners, judges, and police officers require the expertise of the professionals. Notably, forensic psychologists play a significant in punishing and preventing the occurrence of crime. Professionals in the field of criminal psychology have critical responsibilities in figuring out why specific people commit crimes and ways of preventing people from committing crimes.
The responsibilities of forensic psychologists place them in various settings, such as law enforcement agencies, medical facilities, correctional institutions, and court systems. The professionals work collaboratively with law enforcement agencies in developing a brief profile of criminals based on various psychological traits. The criminal profilers study the behaviors of criminals and address any form of legal issues in their line of duties (Roesch & Zapf, 2016). Therefore, they study criminal justice and clinical psychology to enhance their skills and execute their obligations effectively. Forensic psychologists have key responsibilities of assessing prisoners, investigating psychological disorders, and examining the mental health of the criminals to determine if they can stand a trial. The professionals work together with law enforcement agencies and even testify on behalf of defendants.
Forensic psychologists play a specialty task in minimizing and preventing the occurrence of crimes. Gudjonsson and Haward (2016) postulate that the field has encountered dramatic growth as more scholars have enrolled in the field of study to embark on a significant role in the criminal justice system. In some instances, the professionals can provide mental health services, such as assessing, diagnosing, and treating individuals in contact with the criminal justice system.
