Project Background
Key Stakeholders of the Project
Young people who are in the phase of growth and development into adulthood are referred to as adolescents. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, this period is from 12 years of age up to 24 years of age, and these years are where there are changes in the mental, physical, emotional, and social well-being of the individual (Everymind Organization, 2021). The transition happens holistically, and the environmental stressors present continuously pose a challenge to a young adult's mental health and well-being. According to the World Health Organization, mental health issues among adolescents account for 16% of the global problem in disease and injury among the said age group (2020). Some of the mental problems that adolescents are dealing with are social phobias, autism, anxiety, depression, and many more. Due to the variety of signs and symptoms of mental illnesses, it is challenging to create a diagnosis, treat the individual, and educate society about these essential things. The key stakeholders of this project are adolescents suffering from mental illnesses.
Adolescents with mental illnesses will genuinely benefit from art because this will be an opportunity to promote self-expression in a safe environment. This will allow the viewers and audiences about each individual’s story, which goes beyond the mental illnesses that are usually the aspect that becomes the defining characteristic or trait of the person when it should not. The art exhibit will then be an educational experience and a form of communication through the ideas and concepts that the artist conveys to the receiver, who then, in turn, interacts with the art itself and its meaning while also incorporating a personal perception of the receiver, making the experience a rich and beautiful dialogue (Juncker & Balling, 2016). In addition to conveying a message and creating a conversation with the viewers of art, there are also known beneficial effects of creating art that lies in the process, rather than just the finished product. It is also not based on the individual’s level of talent or skill. Based on research, art promotes relaxation, reduces stress, facilitates communication, and even has a positive effect on neurological diseases that is why art is also used as a form of therapy for various populations with different concerns (Juncker & Balling, 2016). With all these said, art can be the medium to engage with and educate the people in society about the reality of mental illnesses, including their effects on adolescents. Art can serve as advocacy to raise awareness about the social responsibility that each one has towards adolescents with mental illnesses to change the negativity that envelops mental illnesses (Fisher & Crosby, 2020).
Challenges and Issues Faced by Adolescents with Mental Illnesses
The community of adolescents with mental illnesses continuously faces challenges in their daily lives because, in society, illnesses and disabilities have always been thought negatively. The individual with the illness or disability is a lesser being compared to everyone else. ...
