It is no surprise that there is leadership conflict in the committee. However, having members with different leadership styles should not necessarily be a challenge. It can also be an opportunity to utilize the different strengths of the group. As Nathan’s friend, I would advise him to do so. As a servant leader, Nathan knows how to place the interests of his community members first. So, in every decision he makes, he needs to make sure it meets the interests of the community members. However, this may not be easy. Nathan needs to be confident and commanding as the chairman. This will allow him to earn the respect of other members who are also leaders in their organizations. When dealing with the different leadership styles that his committee members have, Nathan, should focus on cultivating their strengths. For instance, when dealing with the member who applies transformational leadership, Nathan should encourage him to propose changes to the community. Regarding Owen, Nathan needs to confront him on his bullying to ensure a productive relationship in the committee. Also, Nathan needs to encourage Owen to apply his passion for the community within the committee instead of making aggressive remarks.
Focusing on the strengths of group members allows for a supportive environment (Eisenberg et al., 2013). Therefore, as Nathan’s friend, I would advise him to ensure that members refrain from making negative remarks about other members.
