In Perfect Illusions, you'll meet 16-year-old Suni, who is now in the early stages of what could be a long and arduous battle with bulimia; 26-year-old Marya, who documented her 15-year hardships with anorexia and bulimia in the book Wasted; and 20-year-old Annie, who then became bulimic during a junior high bout with clinical depression. Anna's story is told through thoughtful notes in her journal.

The young women's family describe their frantic attempts to assist their daughters, as well as the anxiety, bewilderment, and frustration they've experienced while dealing with an issue that has no clear source. Perfect Illusions include interactions with professionals in the treatment of binge eating disorders and visits to a support group for parents of children with eating problems. Annie, Suni, and Marya open up about their experiences, recounting how their eating disorders began as a reaction to demands and difficulties in their life. The women recount how their eating problems compelled them to live in concealment and avoidance. Annie's parents didn't learn about her bulimia for 4 years until their child was a sophomore at a school 2,000 miles away and a sorority member contacted to inform them of the problem. Marya began forcing herself to vomit when she was 9 years old, but her parents didn't find out about it until they visited her at boarding school and saw their 14-year-old daughter very thin.
