Drug and alcohol abuse is a problem that many people around the globe are battling against. The fact that addiction to substance abuse and recovery are more of a process than a choice makes it a rather difficult encounter for addicts. The developmental model of recovery describes a staged model that an alcoholic has to undergo towards recovery. For the recovery process to begin, a person must be into drinking, that is, they are addicted. The subsequent stages include the transition stage, early, middle, and late recovery stages, and finally the maintenance stage where the individual, with the help of other external supporters, strives to maintain a state of sobriety to avoid falling back to the drinking problem. Although all the phases of the developmental process involve a lot of developments, I believe the transition phase is the most crucial one in the recovery process.
