Engineering is perhaps one of the fields that can deliver the biggest change to the world. On the one hand, it can be beneficial when used for innovation and the promotion of the common good. It is the reason why we enjoy all the technological marvels that we enjoy today such as the phones, bridges, and even space exploration. On the other hand, it can also be harmful for everyone if used for one’s selfish desire.
Accordingly, being a good engineer generally means using one’s knowledge for the promotion of the common good. He must be able to balance his personal desires (i.e., profit, power, or fame) with the needs of the world, and err in the side of those who are needy. Specifically, being a good engineer means (1) doing their best all the time and (2) the techno-social sensitivity about how one’s actions would affect whole world.
First, doing one’s best all the time means that the engineer must his work with pride and exhibit competence wherever and whenever his skills are needed. As much as possible, he must always perform his utmost best in order to ensure efficiency and fair returns on the part of others.
