I felt uncomfortable discussing issues related to death and dying for certain reasons. First, it was embarrassing, fearful, and awkward to discuss conditions that could not be cured and likely result in someone’s death. Second, I was uncomfortable discussing life-limiting illness since the family member could interpret it wrongly or even say the wrong things, making it appear like I wished them dead. Surprisingly, the family member seemed to be comfortable discussing this subject. This is because the family member embraced the discussion noting that it helps prepare oneself emotionally for their deaths and the say goodbye to those left behind and enhance their chances of seeking quality medical care. I think the family member was comfortable engaging in this difficult conversation because I was respectful and not forced my opinions on them.
