Introduction
Retribution and punishment are the core tenets of a justice system (Masur, Bronsteen, & Buccafusco, 2010). The proponents of retribution and punishment assert that guilty people deserve punishment and that the punishment should be proportional to the severity of the crime. They argue that those found guilty of a crime should suffer appropriately and proportionate to the perceived weight of the crime. In the modern world, the concept of retribution and judgment forms a crucial part of the global justice system, and community members agree. However, problems emerge when the crime in question is murder. Historically, people found guilty of murder were either hanged or put to death through other means, including those enhanced by technology like electrocution and lethal injections. In the same period, campaigns against the death sentence have emerged and made significant strides in transforming justice systems (Bohm, 2017). Today, over two-thirds of countries have abolished the death sentence. The United States is leading with over 21 states. While the debate that pits the proponents of the justice system against its opponents rages on, taking legal, political, moral, and religious perspectives; statistical evidence now suggests that the death penalty might not be as effective in deterring crime.
Background Information
The primary goal of capital punishment is to deter crime, which should be reflected by a substantial decline in the reported numbers of heinous crimes. Nevertheless, statistics suggest that it might be ineffective given that 20 out of the 25 US states with the highest crime rates have legalized capital punishment. If capital punishment was effective, then the states that have outlawed it should have more crime rates while those that have legalized it should have less. However, the reverse is true. Notwithstanding its lack of merit, capital punishment contravenes human rights. Its continued use puts innocent people at the risk of death row conviction given the statistics showing that 4% of all death row convicts turn out to have been innocent. Besides, the death penalty is costly yet the money channeled toward its execution could be used to build houses for the homeless. Statistical evidence shows that, unlike the whites, innocent African Americans are more likely to be convicted on the death penalty.
