While some of Sigmund Freud’s ideas are no longer applicable in modern psychology, his ideas of transference and countertransference are still relevant. Transference is when a client begins to treat the counselor as another person in their life. For example, the client can see the counselor as their father or brother. Countertransference is the opposite because the counselor redirects emotions to the client (Kinney, 2011). Based on Sigmund’s Psychoanalytic theory, transference and countertransference occur on the subconscious level and, therefore, may be hard to detect (Loewenthal, 2018). The Attachment Theory explains this phenomenon where young children need to develop and relationship with at least one caregiver for social and emotional development. Thus, transference can be potentially valuable in therapy sessions as long as the counselor notices it and uses it as a means to treat when possible. However, countertransference is destructive in the therapy sessions and, therefore, must be detected and avoided by the counselor.
