Some commentators believe that psychologists can never be effective in offering treatment in prison or jail as they are perceived as being agents of the correctional system, and they will be perceived that way for long as prisons and jail exist. Do you agree?
I agree with the perception that psychologists constitute part of the correctional system, which impedes effective treatment in psychological interventions. Psychological services often support services that are not considered as the core mandate in a correctional facility as espoused in prison, but they are support services. Psychological services are similar to other services like education and medical services, which are services that support the well-being of inmates, and prisoners do have the right to access such services. There are distinctive goals of psychotherapy amongst inmates, which include the rehabilitation of offenders in custody, mitigating adverse effects associated with damaging psychological impact due to imprisonment and meeting the needs of inmates with mental health problems.
The perception that psychological services are part of the correctional system emerges when there is little or no distinction between the prison itself and the psychological services unit. Psychological services within they are within departments in prison or contracted outside services, ought to demonstrate a sense of autonomy. Instead, psychological services should not appear to be deeply entrenched in the correction system, but as support services that are arguably autonomous and be practice under the armpit of professional bodies. Psychologists working within or in consultation with institutional corrections, then, must identify approaches to do their work within a system that is placed in the position having a rationale for its operations, and this will ensure that psychologists will perform better (Bartol & Bartol, 2019).
Psychologists also work in an environment correctional setting, and this may diminish their ability to secure therapeutic success because prisoners always get transferred. Some correctional centre officers do not support the psychological roles. There are also limitations on confidentiality, whereby prisoners feel that psychologists are representatives of the prison administration rather than advocates for their interests (Bartol & Bartol, 2019). Perceiving psychological services as a core component of the correctional system is quite problematic because the inmates may lack thrust in collaboration due to the inherent reputation of correctional systems. Prisoners want space and a bit of freedom to express themselves during therapy where they are free from constant surveillance and an opportunity to be valued, but the nature of the prison system tends to constrict these desires. If psychologists fail to demonstrate a bit of autonomy and be perceived as the representatives of correctional authorities, the objectives of psychotherapy may continue to present little or no positive impact.
