Based on my reading in Wit, Critical Care, and what I heard from Dr. Walter Moczynski, patients need spirituality and a good relationship with healthcare providers, which is beyond the provision of effective, accurate direct patient care. Spirituality entails belonging to a particular religion or faith-based group. Patients who relate well to their physicians are highly likely to share their feelings about the treatment of their medical history. Spirituality and trusting patient-doctor relationship bolster the provision of effective medical services.
In particular, spirituality is the human aspect that entails how individuals express and seek purpose and the meaning of life. In addition, it refers to patient connectedness to self, to nature, to holiness, and to others (Shih et al., 2019). Based on a Gallup poll in 2017, 77% of Americans identify to be religious and 87% believe in God’s existence. According to the Religion and Spirituality in Cancer Care (RSCC) research, 78% of cancer patients believed that spirituality was crucial to their disease experience (Shih, Moczynski, Gallivan, & Balboni, 2019). As a result, spirituality helps patients to cope with numerous challenges they encounter during their path to recovery.
