Cluster C personality disorders comprise avoidant, dependent, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. According to Bachrach and Arntz (2021), the common characteristics of these disorders include that they have high disease burdens and societal costs, and major consequences for comorbid mental disorders. Most importantly, these disorders are associated with higher levels of (social) anxiety. The major characteristic of avoidant personality disorder is that it makes people feel inadequate and inferior to human beings. As a result, individuals suffering from this condition tend to be scared of criticism, rejected, or embarrassed. Such fears cause them to avoid social interactions. The main characteristics of dependent personality disorder include the need to be cared for and a lack of self-confidence. Individuals suffering from this condition need help to make major life decisions, and their biggest fear is abandonment. Lastly, obsessive-compulsive disorder is characterized by individuals being preoccupied with lists, details, rules, and organization. Perfectionism and productivity tendencies hinder them from establishing fruitful relations. Overall, it is observable that cluster C personality disorders are characterized by the inability to form and sustain social relations due to underlying anxiety.
