Research Designs That Can Be Used To Study Learning
Many research methods are used in psychology to study learning, to study changes among individual over time psychologists use the systematic observation that involves the natural process of development among individuals. According to Charles Darwin theory, human adapt to changes in his environment to survive. Therefore, it is important to understand how nature influences behavior (Pinker, 2004).
Two research designs used to study learning includes the longitudinal design and cross-sequential design. Longitudinal design involves a process where several individuals sharing similar characteristics known as cohort including age or gender are studied. Longitudinal methods can be used to generate conclusions on types of learning processes that are universal and other learning processes that occur among member of a cohort (Brown, Taylor & Ponambalum, 2016).
Longitudinal design can also be used to observe how learning varies between individuals and explain the causes of such variations. Since members of a cohort share similar and unique characteristics longitudinal designs can only be applicable in understanding normative learning trends, which are universal to such cohorts (Brown, Taylor & Ponambalum, 2016).
