Positive reinforcement is used in school-based settings to encourage a desired behavior in a learner. An example of positive reinforcement would be rewarding a student with a few extra minutes of free time every time the student completes the assigned work punctually. The example would be a case of positive reinforcement in the sense that the student would strive to consistently complete their assignment on time as it would earn them extra free time. in such a way, the extra free time would incentivize the learner to repeat the behavior in the future.
Extinction is another strategy that can be used to eliminate unwanted behaviors in a classroom setting. The term describes the removal of reinforcement for a given behavior to decrease the frequency of a given behavior over time. An example of extinction in a classroom setting is withholding attention for a student who frequently acts out to gain the classroom's attention. To this end, the teacher would encourage the class to ignore the attempts of such a learner to gain attention. The denial of attention serves as the removal of reinforcement that the student gained for engaging in disruptive behaviors. As the reinforcement decreases, the learners are unlikely to continue engaging in disruptive behaviors in the classroom.
