Counseling is a process that requires the counselor to build a close relationship with the client. This allows the client to open up about their issues and thus facilitates an effective counseling process. However, if the client does not feel comfortable sharing information with the counselor, it might be challenging to counsel them. Therefore, it is the role of the counselor to acquire and develop certain skills that will facilitate an effective counseling session. Among such skills are good communication skills, patience, compassion, emotional stability, trustworthiness, and problem-solving skills. These skills can be acquired by interacting with other people and refining the skills while studying the counseling course.
At the beginning of the counseling session, the counselor must reassure the client that they can open up about their problems. Therefore, the counselor should have good communication skills. In addition, the feelings of trust assure the client that they can discuss their issues without the fear of being judged.
