It is widely known fact that women earn much less than men and this is for the same amount of work and position. This issue has been widely discussed, debated, and was once upon a time the center of the feminist rhetoric. In her article, Porter (2014) notes that women essentially earn “less than three-quarters of the salary (given to men) for the same work in many industries.” However, this is not the only issue. Since time immemorial, “women have had dual roles as income earners (workers) and mothers/caregivers, while men have largely been income workers only” (Bertilla et al., 2016). The latter issue has often been ignored and few have even tried to talk about it. Initially, it was women’s representation in the workforce that was an issue but gradually, this was dealt with and currently, one could say that women make up a significant percentage of today’s workforce. However, talking about labor supply by gender, it might seem like women are judged by different standards as men but evidence seems to suggest that they work more or key in more work hours per week compared to men.
First of all, the point that Bertilla and his colleagues make drives the conversation that some of the work that women do is often overlooked. From their findings, it is clear that men supply more hours of labor compared to women. This assertion is supported by a study done by Pew Research Center in 2013 which indicates that “men spend about 10 hours more a week than women in paid work.” The key phrase in the statement above is paid work which means that men spend more time at their places of work compared to women.
