Racial Preference on Sex Education in Public Schools
Introduction
There have been varying views on the position of parents regarding sex education in public schools. This project aims at establishing the relationship between a person’s race (white, black, other) and their preference (favor or oppose) on sex education in public schools in the USA. The issue has been on the headlines in the recent past with parents encouraging their students to learn sex education (Hendricks, and Howerton, 2010).
Research Question
What is the relationship between a person’s race and their attitude towards sex education in public schools? (favor, oppose)?
Hypothesis
H0: There is a significant relationship between a person’s race and their position regarding sex education in the US public schools.
H1: The relationship between a person’s race and their attitude towards sex education in the US public schools is insignificant.
Methodology
The data used for the project is extracted from the American General Social Survey (GSS) collected in 2012. The GSS 2012 data retrieved from http://gss.norc.org/get-the-data is exported to IBM SPSS Statistics 24 program for analysis. Linear regression analysis is used to establish the relationship between the dependent and the independent variable. Further, we run crosstabs to determine the association between the dependent and the independent variables. The analysis involves the use of sexeduc (Would you be for or against sex education in the public schools?) as the dependent variable and RACE (Race of respondent) as the independent variable. One thousand nine hundred seventy-four respondents were involved in the research (n=1974).
Results
Regression Analysis
The regression model generated a linear function y= 1.124 -0.024x (y= sex education in public schools, x= respondent’s race) with a meagre 0.3 % fraction of variance explained (R2). There is a weak negative relationship between the independent (race) and the dependent variable (Would you be for or against sex education in the public schools?) at p=0.061 significance level
