You have just been hired as the chief executive officer (CEO) in a medium-sized organization. The organization is not suffering financially, but neither is it doing as well as it could do. This is largely because the organization is stagnated in old ideas having not kept pace with the changing standards of the sector it serves. It does; however, have a handful of new employees who are eager to see the organization modernize. The organization also has several long-time employees who have remained with the company through the good times and the bad. The board of directors feels a sense of loyalty and obligation to these steadfast individuals, but the board also knows that moving some parts of the operation "off-shore" would be better for the organization. In this assignment, you will discuss how you as a leader would direct this organization through the changes that are necessary for its survival.

In today’s business environment, organizational change is characterized by complexities, more so because many organizations are continuously changing. Successful organizational change is highly dependent on the effectiveness of organizational leadership (Alavi & Gill, 2016). Therefore, leaders play a significant role in organizational change. In this paper, I will discuss how I would lead an organization that has been stagnant because it has kept old ideas that are no longer heightening organizational success. In addition, the organization has some very loyal employees and the board of directors is concerned about letting them go as part of the organizational change. To lead this organization, I would draw upon two key leadership theories namely transformational and situational leadership theories.
Leadership Theories
Transformational Leadership Theory
Transformational leadership theory emphasizes inspirational and motivational leaders who direct employees towards achieving the organization’s vision/ goals (Anderson et al., 2016; Hays-Thomas, 2017). It is also referred to as "the relationship" theory and it explores leadership as a construct of the relationship between leaders and followers. Transformational leaders have charisma and can influence their followers because they have gained their trust, admiration, and respect. This theory suggests that transformational leaders possess four key elements (Anderson et al., 2016):
* Idealized influence: The leader is a role model to his followers. They want to emulate the leader because they admire and respect him. As such, transformational leaders can influence followers to achieve the organization’s vision by leading by example.
* Inspirational motivation: The leader has a clear vision about what he wants the organization to achieve and followers are motivated to achieve this vision. The leader fosters a spirit of commitment towards achieving the vision and goals of the organization.
* Intellectual stimulation: The leader encourages the followers to be creative in finding solutions as well as exploring new learning opportunities. Such leaders know that mistakes can be made but they also know that they can be an opportunity to learn and become better.
* Individualized consideration: The leader offers support to individual followers and empowers them to achieve personal growth. It is a relationship theory and as such, it requires leaders to foster positive relationships with followers.
When leaders show the four elements in their leadership, they can influence followers and facilitate organizational commitment, which is essential in today’s business environment.
Situational Leadership Theory
The situational theory of leadership emphasizes the ability of a leader to adapt to changing situations. It suggests that different situations require a different leadership style based on the commitment and competency levels of the followers (Thompson & Glaso, 2018).
