This industry provides two broader sectors namely the hospitality or food and beverage and the lodging sectors. The main objective of the managers in both sectors is to ensure the premise become profitable and efficient besides ensuring that customers gain meal experience whether on vacation or traveling which enable these premises to gain repeat business. Thus, choosing hospitality management career is the best to consider when one gets ready to graduate from high school or when changing a career since the industry provides relevant skills required in all the departments with unique paths within the same industry.
Management Careers in Food & Beverage
Food and beverage management career is service based with the aim of ensuring that the consumers get products and services that meet or exceed their expectations while ensuring that all operations are conducted within the safety standards. Consequently, this results in improved profitability due to minimal costs of production due to effective management (Cousins, Foskett & Gillespie, 2002). Food and beverage industry offers different management careers that include;
Food and beverage service supervisor: the food and beverage supervisors normally supervise the kitchen, bar and food and beverage service staffs. These supervisors are required to have a good command of communication and management skills. On the same note, the supervisors typically assist in serving customers during the peak hours (Cousins, Foskett & Gillespie, 2002). Therefore, their duties comprise supervision, scheduling of food and beverage staff, ensure customer satisfaction, address customer complaints, solve conflicts of the staffs, order as well as provide proper maintenance of inventory cost control. Regarding the experiences, the supervisors are supposed to have excellent skills in sales and customer service as well as having proven human resource management and organization skills (Cousins, Foskett & Gillespie, 2002). On the same note, the supervisor should be knowledgeable about products, services, the environment of the locality and the laws/regulations governing the industry. The food and beverage supervisor through experience have the career path of becoming the food service manager, beverage service manager, dining room manager, catering manager, and food production manager (Cousins, Foskett & Gillespie, 2002).
Nightclub manager: these managers typically plan, direct and control all the activities of the nightclub in hotels, private clubs, and resorts. This position has a different focus compared to the beverage service manager since the nightclub manager only deals on a nightclub enterprise instead of all the beverage services (Cousins, Foskett & Gillespie, 2002).
