Failure to prepare accurate and thorough reports can lead to the release of a suspect and also criminal charges against the police officer. Any recorded information can be sequentially revised, examined and acquiesced as proof by law enforcers using body-worn cameras (University of Cambridge, 2016). The use of this technology increases the transparency of frontline policing. As with other technologies, body-worn cameras have both pros and cons. Advantages of body-worn cameras includes capturing the footage that fixed cameras often miss, evidence is captured in form of victims and witness statements, they help to reduce false claims made against officers and improve citizen’s trust of police agencies by enhancing transparency and accountability of its officers.
Body-worn cameras facilitate case processing and speed up court proceedings by providing incontrovertible proof about the facts of an incident. Despite the many benefits such cameras present, considerable controversy surrounds their use. Serious concerns raised involve privacy issues, such as when officers visit homes, interview a sexual assault victim, or obtain footage where juveniles are involved. Other concerns center on the storage capabilities of such technologies and how data can be retrieved if such cameras fail to operate (Hess, Orthmann, & Cho, 2016). These cameras also discourage police officers from engaging in unlawful activities and unsuitable actions. Frequent use of body-worn cameras benefits law enforcement officers and the community.
Automated speed enforcement is another technology used by law enforcement officers to apprehend criminals. Red-light running is commonly practiced using cameras, but with less access to speeding applications. Enforcing speed limits on all roads is a great challenge to the law enforcement officers. Automated enforcement technologies increase enforcement efforts and communal discernment on the likelihood of speeding citations. Such technology discourages drivers from driving at a speed above the allowed limits. Probably this can be achieved in the absence of the police officers if the law permits such use.
