Bureau of Labour Statistics (BLS) indicates that Union membership has declined since 2000. Statistically, 20.1% of the 19.2 million employed Americans were unionized in 2000, but the figures have been slowly declining since (Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Overall, the union membership rate remains high among public employees compared to private sector employees. Over the past decade, union membership in the private sector declined from 9% in 2000 to about 6% in 2019. The public sector unionization dropped from 33.9% in 2000 to about 33.6% in 2019 (Bureau of Statistics, 2021). Today, Unionized members are more of policemen, tax collectors, teachers, or firefighters than electricians, factory workers, auto workers, or plumbers.
The decline in unionization is not because workers (private and public) no longer want unions but mainly due to fierce corporate opposition to workers' freedom to form and join unions. The decline in unionization in the private sector has mainly been due to the erosion of employees' bargaining power and their collective bargaining power, leading to income deterioration and wage suppression. At the same time, robust policy proposals intended to increase employees' bargaining power have been prioritized, reducing unions' influen...
