Response Paper: “What Leaders Really Do” by Kottler
Leadership is utilizing one’s skills and the available resources to provide direction to a group of people. On the contrary, management is the process of coordinating the resources towards meeting specific goals. Peter Ducker summarizes the definition by stating that “Management is doing things right whereas leadership is doing the right things” (Campbel, 2021). John Kotter notes that “Management is about the present, leadership is about the future” (Campbel, 2021). Based on these definitions, it is evident that management and leadership are intertwined and complementary. Successful managers transform into the right leaders. I agree with John Kotter on three aspects;
1 Leadership and management are distinct but complementary.
2 Management entails adjusting with complexity, whereas leadership entails coping with change.
3 Creating a culture of leadership.
Management and leadership are different but complementary.
It is accurate, according to Kotter, to state that the two are different but complement each other since there are situations that call for leadership skills as opposed to applying the scientifically tested functions of management. Kotter brings out the complementarity when he says; companies should be mindful that strong leadership without proper management skills and vice versa does not guarantee success. Success only occurs when the team can effectively combine strong leadership with appropriate management skills. Therefore, successful managers become successful leaders and vice versa. 
The difference in the two terms becomes apparent in Kottler’s (2001) assertion that management entails one’s ability to cope with complexity, whereas leadership entails adapting to change. Managers adjust to the management complexities through planning and budgeting, while the leaders adjust to the circumstances by providing direction. Managers organize resources, whereas leaders align those resources towards meeting the goals. Managers focus on controlling and solving problems, whereas leaders motivate and inspire subordinates.
Management entails coping with complexity, whereas leadership concerns the ability to adjust to change.
