Publix Stores is one of the largest employee-owned supermarket chains in the United States. The company has its headquarters in Lakeland, Florida. It serves in the retail industry and does not currently offer services to consumers outside the United States. Publix Stores operate in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Tennessee (Publix Stores, 2021). The major products offered by Publix Stores include food, grocery, beverages, and other household goods. The company had 1,218 retail outlets and 193000 employees as of 2020. This analysis focuses on the historical development and growth, business-level and corporate levels strategies, and the structure and control systems of Publix Stores.
History, Development, and Growth
Publix Stores has experienced exponential growth and development over the years. Founded as a single store in 1930 by George Jenkins, the company has expanded to become the largest employee-owned chain of groceries (Publix Stores, n.d). The chain of grocery presently owned by the Jenkins Family and former employees of the Publix Grocery Stores. In 1930, Jenkins opened a small grocery store in Winter Haven, Florida, to supply the locals with food and grocery. Jenkins later partnered with his employees and opened more stores under the same company before moving its headquarters to Lakeland. The store grew significantly, and by 1959, Publix Grocery Stores had become a dominant chain of supermarkets in Florida. The company also opened new retail locations in the various states of the US. Publix Stores opened a store in South Caroline and Georgia in 1993 and another one in Alabama in 1996. Later, it expanded in Tennessee and North Carolina in 2002 and 2014, respectively. The most recent establishment was in 2017 in Virginia. It primarily focuses on distributing groceries, food, and beverages to the citizens of the US.

The company also focuses on corporate social responsibility, independence, and innovations (Farfan, 2020). It seeks to create value and maintain health among the members of the communities it serves. Publix Stores remains committed to its vision, mission, and corporate culture by being intolerant to waste and environmental pollution, focusing passionately on consumer value, dedicated to the employment and dignity of its associates. The company also offers exceptional stewardships to its stakeholders and ensures corporate social responsibility by engaging the communities around its retail locations.
