Workplace safety is a major concern for most organizations because it can have some damaging effects on the individual's safety and reputation and can cause legal battles with the governing authorities. Bearing this in mind, most organizations have well-laid down safety regulations whose violation can lead to disciplinary action. In most cases, the Human Resource (HR) manager has a role to play in the formulation of safety policies and regulations and the design and implementation of disciplinary measures for employees prone to the violation of policies (Okolie & Udom, 2019). Before considering the ultimate consequence for the associate who violated the safety regulations, HRM might want to consider a list of actions first.
The most important action to take as an HR manager is to call out the associate for committing the safety offense. Leaving the associate to walk scot-free after committing the mistake gives room for future occurrences of similar offenses. The caution should, however, not be too personal or more aggressive. The HR manager should politely engage the associate to avoid making them feel horrible about the horrendous mistake. A reminder for the impending disciplinary action that might manifest to termination is essential to ensure that the associate will not repeat the same mistake. The violation of the associate's safety precaution might be an indicator of laxity in upholding and implementing safety policies and disciplinary actions.
