After reading the article “Power, Politics, and Leadership in the Workplace (Links to an external site.)” (Cairns, 2017), complete the Political Skills Inventory on Pages 7 and 8. What is your overall political score? Discuss each of your Individual Competency Scores. Do you feel the score adequately reflects your political skills? Can the competencies be used unethically? If so, how? How might you use each of the competencies to positively impact team performance? Would any of the power bases by involved? If so, which ones and how?

Over the past years, organizations have been well-thought-out to be political arenas hence making organizational politics a vital topic. Consequently, leaders must possess political will and political skill to survive and become successful in their roles. Political skills are crucial in building connections, fostering trust, and influencing people (Munyon et al., 2015). These skills are the fundamental qualities of a transformational leader, which help increase job satisfaction, self-efficacy, work productivity, organizational commitment, and job engagement. According to Williams et al. (2017), political skill is the ability to successfully understand others at work, use the understanding to inspire others as well as act in ways that improve personal and organizational performance. Politically skilled individuals are characterized by four essential behaviors; social astuteness, managing social networks, genuineness and sincerity, interpersonal influence (Cairns, 2017).

Interpersonal influence helps individuals to build strong relationships with members of an organization. Politically skilled individuals create good understanding with team members and demonstrate good judgment on when to be confident, resulting in more accommodating relationships (Mencl et al., 2016). Moreover, they reasonably play their political roles with ease. They also ensure all the parties win hence making them successful in the long-term. Finally, their goals and objectives are aligned with the organization's mission.
I consider myself to have strong interpersonal influence. From the criteria set in this case, I have an average score of 6. Typically, I firmly believe that I make team members feel comfortable and at ease while around me. I have always give people positive atmospheres, embrace them with a smile, and listened to them carefully, and make people feel at home while around me. Similarly, I communicate efficiently and effectively with other people. Effective communication does not only involve exchanging information but also understanding the emotion and intentions behind the information (Mencl et al., 2016). Being a good listener, avoiding unwanted advice, being realistic, and having excellent tone and body language helps me to communicate with other people effectively.
 Moreover, I am good at developing good relationships with most people. Usually, good rapport helps to build mutual attentiveness, better coordination, and positivity in a team (Williams et al., 2017). Being emphatic, creating common ground among team members, and as well as my ability to create shared experience helps to develop a good rapport with my team members. However, I slightly agree that I am good at getting people to like me. Regularly, I put the interests of the organizations before my interests. In this respect, I can be manipulative and dictatorial to make things happen. As a result, this might not get along well with most of the team members.
