The current work environment has become highly dynamic and very challenging making workers work under pressure to deliver. Such demands affect even productive workers, hence affecting the overall performance of an organization (Kale, 2014). Dr. Hallowell studied such working trends and came up with five steps of the cycle of excellence to assist managers in getting the best out of a team. Dr.Hallowell five steps include selection, connecting, playing or coaxing, grapple and grow and shine (Hallowell, 2013).
Selection is the initial process to achieve excellence; this includes selecting not only competent workers, but also continuously reviewing their performance and their levels of work satisfaction based on their specific job descriptions (Hallowell, 2013). According to Dr.Hallowell, the selection process is a continuous activity that requires constant monitoring and reviews. By selecting the right individual, is not the end for manager job the second step is connecting employees to strengthen the team. The goal is for the managers to be aware of how to incorporate the two steps to create a successful team that would add value to the organization (Hallowell, 2013).
According to the cycle of excellence, the manager needs to adopt creative strategies to engage employee to avoid the usual tense atmosphere that generates stress among workers. A conducive environment needs to stimulate and nourish worker a social atmosphere will be ideal and will increase performance (Hallowell, 2013). The fourth step is to create conditions necessary for growth and development. For employees to grow and develop, managers need to challenge the status quo and give employee new tasks and responsibilities in exchange for rewards like promotion (Hallowell, 2013).
