In establishing the difference between extrinsic and intrinsic rewards in motivating workers, the definition of extrinsic and intrinsic differ on the source of motivation. Extrinsic motivation comes along due to an external force, fear, or conditions, while intrinsic motivation builds up from personal goals, desires, or aspirations (Ainomugisha, 2019). In Chapter 5 of the ebook "Organizational Behavior & Management," it is possible to compare and contrast the extrinsic and intrinsic idea of rewards with Herzberg's Two-Factor Theory of motivation.

Marlow's Need Hierarchy classifies needs in a hierarchical arrangement as lowest-level needs and highest-level needs. The low-level needs are physiological and high-level are self-actualized. Herzberg's two-factor theory also includes hygiene factors, which he refers to as dissatisfiers and motivators (satisfiers). Both approaches are referring to extrinsic and intrinsic rewards.
