Talent Acquisition
Line managers are strategically involved in attracting, engaging, recruiting, and acquiring new talent necessary for meeting the organization’s needs. Line managers observe labor market trends and workers’ availability to help in efficient talent acquisition (Paul, 2019). For instance, line managers participate in talent acquisition by posting job advertisements online, screening job applicants, conducting preliminary interviews, and shortlisting qualified candidates.
Providing relevant employee training and development
A line manager may be responsible for evaluating the workforce effectiveness by performing workplace needs assessments and analyzing skill and knowledge gaps in the organization. This evaluation might also include determining job classifications accuracies, in other words, ensuring that employees are placed in jobs that match their talents and skills (Paul, 2019). For instance, after recruiting a new employee, a line manager can organize online or even in-office training to help induct and settle the new employees.
Creating successful working relations
Line managers are the first managerial layer after the front-line staff. They are the initial contact point for the direct workers’ reports, liaising and relaying information between top leaders, HR, and other employees (Paul, 2019). For instance, a line manager may help resolve conflicts between employees and senior management.

Planning involves selecting and evaluating acceptable objectives and activities to pursue and then setting the course required for success (Leonard, 2019). Organizing involves pooling finances, personnel, and material resources, needed to achieve the established goals (Leonard, 2019). For instance, Company X above might need a better inventory but lacks the finances to implement this. Company X’s priority would thus become obtaining finances first.
Staffing involves attracting, engaging, recruiting, and acquiring employees who are the right fit for different teams and departments (Leonard, 2019). For instance, company X could train leaders while simultaneously developing present talent and identifying employees ready for promotions.
Leading involves vision articulation to employees, empowering, inspiring, and motivating employees using efficient communication skills, persuasion, vision, and influence (Leonard, 2019). For instance, company X’s managers could supervise subordinates in the inventory and shipping department, tell them what needs to be done, and set deadlines while motivating employees through guided leadership.
