A good leader is a good follower. This previous saying suggests that for an individual to effectively teach and guide his team, he must first be able to follow those who succeed him. However, in spite of the positive message that could be gained from this saying, it is apparent that leaders these days prefer not being called “followers” since this term implies a negative connotation. Nonetheless, plenty of studies have been dedicated to studying and categorizing followership because this kind of skill is essential for the progress and development of an organization.
Robert Earl Kelley created one of the categorizations about the different kinds of followership. In the Kelley Model of Followership, followers have been categorized based on their ways of thinking and acting. On the one hand, he said that when it comes to thinking, followers could either be independent (creative, innovative, and critical thinkers) or dependent (uncritical thinkes). On the other hand, each member could also be assessed based on their actions as active (takes the initiative) or passive (docile) (Bjugstad, Thach, Thompson, & Morris, 2006). In turn, the combination of these two categorizations gives four different personality types which are (1) Alienated followers, (2) conformist followers, (3) passive followers, and (4) exemplary followers.
