Human resources are the most important and critical resources in an organization and HR managers are often tasked with the most difficult yet underappreciated role of managing them. A HR manager whose employees work in total sync without any being rowdy must consider themselves lucky. With a huge number of employees having different personalities and varying objectives, something will certainly go wrong. When an associate starts to solicit for other associates and distributing union cards during working hours, it can interrupt the normal running of operations, cause ineffectiveness, and can be very frustrating to the HR managers. Confronting the situation in the most prudent way possible would be of great significance to the organization, the HR manager, and the associates.
Lamenting the unpleasant behavior of the associate without taking the necessary action will amount to nothing. The first action to take as a responsible HR manager is to inform the associate of his or her unbecoming behavior. This can be done in private by scheduling a meeting with the rogue associate. This meeting will also provide an opportunity for the associate to explain the cause for their defiant character. The other associates who accept union cards and pay attention to the rogue associate during working hours are part of the problem and should also be summoned for cautioning. After listening to both sides of the story from the rouge associate and the other associates accepting solicitation, a reminder for the expected code of conduct, policies, and culture should follow.
