The European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Model consists of an individual assessment framework applied during the measurement of strengths and sectors requiring improvement in an organization to carry out all its activities. The word ‘excellence’ is applied mainly because the Excellence model lays great emphasis on the activities carried out by an organization or what it has in plan to do in its bid to offer excellent services or products to its customers, service users, and stakeholders (Özmen et al., 2017). The EFQM model comprises various criteria. As discussed below, each criterion in the EFQM model offers a different weight, significance, and score.
The first criterion is leadership. In the EFQM Excellence Model, the leadership criterion defines how leaders develop and facilitate the achievement of organizational vision mission and develop and implement values needed to achieve long-term success. Alongside, good leadership must ensure that these values are implemented in the most effective behavior and actions to achieve success in the organization’s management. Leadership as an enabler has an average weight of 10%.
On the other hand, policy and strategy also act as key criteria in the EFQM model. Through policy and strategy, how the mission and vision of an organization are implemented via clearly defined policies, plans, objectives, and processes can be defined. Therefore, the success of the EFQM model depends on how well an organization employs its policies and strategies. The weight of policy and strategy lies at 8%.
