Introduction
Geert Hofstede referred culture as a set of rules and guidelines that describe the expectations and beliefs of a particular group. He describes a culture in five dimensions and explains the need for cooperation across the diverse cultures to promote human survival. There are five Hofstede’s dimensions of culture which includes, power distance, individualism, masculinity, uncertainty avoidance, and long-term orientation as discussed below.
Power distance
This dimension describes the extent to which the less influential individuals in a given community to accept that power in firms and institutions are distributed unequally. The dimension measures the levels of management in an enterprise, including the bottom, middle, and top layers (Noe, 2010). The employees need to understand their level in the organization in the effective production process.
Individualism
Individualism dimension measures the extent to which individuals prefer to work individually rather than collectively. Individualist individual prefers to maintain loose ties with others in the firm while collective individual fully integrates oneself in the enterprise and portrays loyalty to the corporate family. This determines the extent to which an individual relate to the firm (Noe, 2010).
Masculinity
This dimension describes the degree to which the culture in the enterprise favors traditional masculine duties of power, control, and achievement. Masculine cultures often favor money, success, and material possessions while feminine cultures favor quality of life and relationships of the employees (Noe, 2010). The dimension promotes understanding of the employee behavior.
