Employers have a long history of using their power to abuse employees. Past employer practices have led to bloody conflicts. Over time, the development of Federal regulations has helped ease the tense employee/employer relationship.
Create a timeline of all the significant labor legislation passed in the 20th century using Word’s Table (Links to an external site.)feature. Next to the name of each law, place a column with the year it was passed, and then another column, in your own words, provide a description of what the law covered. If the law was amended by another law, make an additional column and explain why and how it amended the previous law.

By the end of the 20th century, several states in the US had enacted and passed several legislations to regulate child labor, working conditions, and minimum wages. Maryland was the first state to pass legislation on workers' compensation for workers injured while working (Toossi,2002). Department of labor was created as an agency and later elevated to cabinet position mandated to develop and promote the welfare of wage earners.

April 28, 1971

Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970

The primary objective was to minimize workplace hazards and implement safety guidelines for employees and employers. It created the occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA). The authority was mandated to establish safety rules, inspect workplaces for safety abuses, and penalize those who violate safety rules and standards (Act,1970). It gave employees the following rights:
* To be trained on workplace hazards and measures to avoid harm.
* Obtain and analyze documentation on job-related diseases and injuries.
* To file a complaint at OSHA to inspect the workplace.
* To be made aware of any tests done and results of workplace hazards.

It was not an amendment.

September 2, 1974

Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974

It was enacted by federal authority to ensure pension schemes and plans in private entities and put in place measures to protect them from corruption. It does not cover plans established by government entities and churches (Snyder,1975). It gives rights to members of pension schemes to receive all information relating to the plan. It also provides them with the right to sue for benefits and breach of any fiduciary duties.

It was not an amendment of any previous legislation.
