Essay Instructions:

I will send you a video link which have one or two guest speakers. You need to apply some ideas in the video in the paper. Pick some of the links and takes looks for. No needs to watch all of them

This semester we have covered a lot of content through presentation and live speakers currently in the industry.  Now it's time to connect it all and ensure a understanding of key components of a "balanced score card" and how various departments contributes.

Please write a 4-5 page that illustrates how at least three departments covered this semester contribute to the success of a hotel and impact the overall balanced score card.  (i.e. - Associate retention has a direct impact on guest service, guest retention and expenses.  Then students would provide examples of what makes this an accurate statement and connection).  Please remember:  The overall balanced score card of success in lodging entails Associate Satisfaction (AOS), Guest Satisfaction (GSS) and Profitability.  While some might look at it a little differently, this paper will be graded based on the premise of how it has been defined (AOS, GSS, Profitability).

Please keep in mind, this is not a discussion post in format/formality and I'm not looking for general statements (i.e. - "the more money we make, the more things we can do for our guests and associates").

Format

  • 4-5 pages
  • Please include opening paragraph, sub-headers and conclusion
  • Double spaced, standard font, standard spacing and margins
  • Be specific and provide examples; the more it is illustrated your understanding and application of the content the more points you will earn!
  • Optional:  Diagrams, Charts, images, etc. (this should not be included in the 4-5 paper)

Please ensure the following:

  • Was a clear understanding of how different departments covered impact the balanced scorecard (AOS, GSS, Profitability)?
  • Was content from presentations and book integrated into the paper and applied?
  • Were there concreate examples to support statements?
  • Were at least three departments that were covered this semester integrated into your paper?
  • Were all departments connected with how they relate to one another?

The hotel and hospitality industry, in general, is one of the most lucrative sectors globally. The hospitality industry employs quite a number of people serving in various capacities and in different departments. While hotels more or less provide and offer the same products, it is service that is the key differentiator. Guests who visit hotels are keen on getting value for the money they spend. They want to enjoy overly sumptuous meals prepared by the best chefs and served in unique and extraordinary ways. Guests also look to sleep in rooms with great ambiance; spacious, super clean, and with wide and comfortable beds and which leaves them with nagging backaches the next day. Basically, guests are continuously looking for great experiences that will leave them yearning to come back sooner rather than later. Based on these and more customer preferences, it has become imperative for hotels to align themselves in that direction to survive the competitive and hostile industry. Hotel owners and managers have to continuously scan the market to identify ways the different departments within their establishments can work together to offer superior services to their customers. Some have established balanced score cards (BSC) to communicate their vision, missions and objectives. BSCs also align strategies with the day to day operations of the different hotel departments. It also allows the management to identify not only the projects but also products and services to prioritize. Through these actions, different hotel departments such as housekeeping, front office, food and beverage, and kitchen achieve the overall budget scorecard of success that entails associate satisfaction, guest satisfaction, and profitability.

It is also a critical function for hotels that strive to differentiate themselves and stand tall above their peers in the industry. Staffs at the front office serve as the first point of contact when customers and clients visit the establishments for various services. From Bhatt (2006) perspective, "This department performs various functions like reservation, reception, registration, room assignment, and settlement of bills of a resident guest and the front office department is considered as the nerve center of a hotel.". The front office employees welcome guests and take time to listen to their needs and preferences. They then assist customers in registering or checking in to the hotels, carry their luggage as they show them their rooms, and eventually help them check out once their stay at the establishment comes to an end. Based on these functions performed by front office employees, it is prudent and sufficient to conclude that they are the employees who directly interact with guests (Bhatt, 2006). As such, they can either make or break a hotel and are highly influential in the achievement of stipulated objectives.
The front office department and the employees impact the overall balanced scorecard in various ways. To begin with, th...
