The number of human-caused and natural disasters in the United States has in increased in the past two decades, with each incident becoming more severe. To adequately prepare for these incidents, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) came with up the concept of ‘Whole Community Approach to Emergency Management.' The approach outlines a scheme that can be used to intensify community engagement and increase the preparedness of individuals to improve the overall adaptability and security of the community.
The whole community approach outlines three principles and six themes that focus on creating an inclusive community. The three principles aim at understanding and meeting the real needs of the community by engaging and empowering everybody within the community (Sobelson et al., 2015). They also what works best for every community and offer unique and appropriate support that strengthens the efforts of the community in emergency management.
