Elements of Critical Thinking
Several elements of critical thinking can be deduced from the reading material. They include analysis, research, bias identification, application of standards, inference, and practice. Analysis means separating an issue into small parts so that each can be examined individually. Research is necessary to unearth relevant facts that support a position (Erstad, 2018). Bias identification, especially one’s own, is vital in the critical thinking process. One should also be able to judge information based on established standards (Umich, n.d.). Inference means the ability to conclude from given data or information. Practice is integral in thinking critically; one can improve their critical thinking skills through practice (Bailin et al., 1999).
The author, Areeba Haider, in her article about children in poverty, demonstrates some good thinking skills. The author synthesizes a wide range of literature to provide the reader with important information about child poverty (Haider, 2021). As a result, the author can correctly infer that child poverty in the U.S. is a consequence of failed leadership.
