Ecuador and the Role of Importers in Rose Flowers Marketing

Essay Instructions:

The assigned case study is "Ecuador: A Rosy Export Future?" at the end of Chapter 6.
Your assignment is to identify one major issue in the case study, provide background for it, analyze it, and reach a conclusion. Your written work should follow the outline:

BACKGROUND, ISSUE, ANALYSIS, and CONCLUSION. You should use these words as headings for your writing. Your work should be typed and double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 font. About two typewritten pages will be sufficient for this assignment.
BACKGROUND: The background should establish a context for the issue. It presents the situation out of which the issue arose. It should provide enough information about the situation so that the reader can understand the issue.
ISSUE: The issue should be presented as a question that can be answered YES or NO. For example, your question could be: Should this company continue to invest in emerging markets? That is a productive question since it leads to an analysis. An unproductive question could be: How did this company expand in emerging markets? That question leads only to a description of what the company did and may not force any critical thinking. So always frame your question so that it can be answered YES or NO, keep the question simple, and do not ask multiple questions since that will complicate your analysis.
ANALYSIS: Your analysis should examine both sides of the question. You should present at least three arguments on each side of your question, YES and NO, and your arguments should be supported by facts from the case and/or information from the reading assignment. In your analysis you should also apply at least one concept from the reading assignment.
CONCLUSION: Your conclusion should answer your question, YES or NO. You should evaluate the arguments you presented in your analysis and make a decision based on the weight of the evidence. In your conclusion you should summarize the arguments that support your decision. Please note that there is no right or wrong answer. Whatever you decide is valid as long as your conclusion is supported by your analysis.
Be sure to cover each component of this process adequately.

Role of Importers in Rose Flowers Marketing
Background
The world's largest consumers of rose flowers happen to be the United States of America and Russia, but the two nations are not the major producers. The countries along the equator have the most favorable weather conditions for flower farming, placing Ecuador, Colombia, and Kenya as some of the world's leading flower-producing countries (Hair, 2019). This suggests that the product has to be moved from the producer to the consumer market as an export product. Unlike other export products, flowers are more perishable and are needed by the final consumer in their fresh state. Therefore, the transport means and logistics have to be as fast as possible. From the growers to the consumers lies a chain of middle parties: the importers, wholesalers, and retailers. Importers are often tasked with the responsibility of making supplies to an export market (Daniels et al., 2018). In most cases, the importers are brokers in nature, buying the product from the growers and selling it to the wholesalers in the destination countries.
Issue
Is the role of importers/brokers necessary in marketing rose flowers? The importers are always located in the country that is importing the flowers, and they are in contact with the growers in the exporting country and the wholesalers in the importing country. In most cases, they own the product once it is at the airport for export and mainly determine the pricing of the product.
Analysis
The importers act in the middle of the growers and wholesalers of roses who are nearer to the consumer but rarely influence the flowers' pricing and quality. Their existence is pivotal in acting as a bridge between the producers and wholesalers while allowing for market information flow between the two parties (Faust & Dole, 2021). Without the importers, the growers are not in a position to explore the existing markets, the timing for the peaks and lower seasons of sales, and other essential information about flower farming. These reasons make the importers a necessary...
