How to Configure a Proxy and DNS Server

Essay Instructions:

Security Appliance Research Paper. Use federal and industry-standard resources such as NIST, SANS, PMBoK,
and SAMM as well as appliance-specific vendor specifications to create an awareness paper that teaches the
system administrator population about how install, use, and maintain one specific network security appliance
similar to the ones you are learning about in the NSE 4 Infrastructure content. Include relevant examples that
detail appliance configuration (including specific commands) and placement within the network, in-text
citations, and provide references at the end of the paper. The security appliance you cover should fall within
one of these categories: External Firewall, Intrusion Detection System, Intrusion Prevention system, Honeypot,
Router and Switch Configuration (together), or Proxy and DNS server (also together). Other network security
appliances may be considered with instructor approval. This paper should be at least two pages long and no
more than four pages long (excluding references).

How to Configure a Proxy and DNS Server
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) bolsters and safeguards the information technology (IT) infrastructure of the United States of America (USA). Indeed, it tests methods, develops proof of implementing concepts, reference data, and performs technical analysis to advance the productive use of IT (Chandramouli and Rose 1). The paper focuses on the process of setting up a proxy and domain name system (DNS) server.
The DNS refers to a distributed computing system, which allows access to web resources using domain names instead of Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (Chandramouli and Rose 2). In addition, a proxy server entails a system that offers a gateway between Internet users. In the scenario at hand, let’s assume that Device A acts as the DNS server of B. In that light, it acts as the DNS proxy. The IP address of the actual DNS is 4.1.1.1, as shown in Figure 1 below.
Figure 1: A DNS Proxy Network Diagram
In Figure 1, the assumption is that the DNS server is Windows server 2000 PC. A mapping between the host name and the IP address is done by doing the following:
system – view
[Sysname] ip host host.com 4.1.1.1
The DNS proxy configuration follows by specifying the server 4.1.1.1.
system – view
[DeviceA] dns server 4.1.1.1
[DeviceA] dns proxy enable (This is done to enable the DNS proxy).
As can be seen in Figure 1, device B is the client. In that light, device A acts as the proxy server that is used to connect to the DNS server. That is why an individual must configure the client by enabling the domain name resolution function as indicated below.
system – view
[DeviceB] dns resolve
[DeviceB] dns server 2.1.1.2 (This specifies the DNS server to be 2.1.1.2).
When a proxy and DNS se...
