Smith (2019) argues that internal customers' needs are as significant as external ones in creating a true quality environment. Further, Smith emphasizes the need to redefine a business's quality environment to include internal and external customers. He argues that concentrating on external customers is paramount for a coherent relationship and productivity, but the satisfaction of internal customers' needs and expectations is also paramount. By focusing on the internal customer, there is a flow of information between departments, reducing competition but increasing complement between departments.
In addition, Smith believes that internal customer-oriented organizations are more productive and successful in satisfying external customers. Thus, information is shared equally, and teamwork is enhanced. Additionally, the new environment creates a culture in which the management addresses direct reports, work associates, and other departments to provide the desired services and products.
