The mortality rates of other diseases are quite low as compared to those of stroke and cancer. Over the last 116 years, stroke and cancer have contributed to the death of most human beings. The dataset that contains this numerical information is available on the data.gov site. The dataset depicts the rates of death caused by stroke, cancer, heart disease, accidents, and influenza/pneumonia. Additionally, the data records start from the year 1900 to 2015. In most cases, records on death rates are normally collected through a national census and sampling methods. In sampling, researchers use data obtained from a specific geographic area to represent the larger population than the sampled area. In every census exercise, the government integrates the death rates of various diseases as a variable among birth rates, mortality rates, etc. Research suggests that there are various ways to curb the number of deaths. Some of these techniques include providing better healthcare, extensive researching on vaccines and curative medicines, quarantining highly affected areas, and creating awareness about the disease.
According to statistics, stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States. Each year over 140,000 people succumb to the disease or end up suffering long-term disability. Statistics illustrate that every 40 seconds someone suffers from stroke. The worst case is that this nightmare can occur to anyone at any age (Wilcox, 2009). Research suggests that those above 65 years of age are at a double risk of having it. Between the year 1995 and 2005, death rates of stroke dropped by 13 percent. In the same year 2005, the actual number of people who died from stroke was 137,000 (Villiger & Villiger, 2014). Based on the data provided by NCHS on data.gov, it is evident that stroke was the primary cause of death over the 116 years.
In the contemporary world, cancer is the most common disease in human beings. The most common type of cancer includes lung, breast, prostate, blood, colorectal, and cervix cancer. The mortality rates of cancer are estimated to be quite high because it affects the vital organs of the human body. For example, in 2018, the total number of cancer-related cases was 1,762,450. Arguably, this translates to at least 4800 cases every day. The risk of contracting cancer increases according to one’s age. According to statistics, the number of persons suffering from cancer above 85 years of age was 140, 690 in March 2019 (Wilcox, 2009). However, research quotes that those in poor countries are likely to succumb to the disease due to lack of proper cancer treatment owing to late-stage diagnosis, lack of funds, lack of improved technology for chemotherapy and no or reduced routine treatment.
