In criminal justice, original and accurate documentation and reporting are of great importance. Lawyers, law enforcement officials, judges, and prosecutors often spend a considerable length of time completing paperwork that is essential for the process of criminal justice. As such, it is important for them to have professional communication skills, including both verbal and non-verbal skills (Stojkovic, Kalinich & Klofas, 2014). This paper describes three essential communication skills vital in a criminal justice role. These are proofreading, taking writing seriously, and making straightforward declarative sentences.
Proofreading
A large number of documents are used in the criminal justice system, for instance, records of judgments and court proceedings, bail application forms, charge sheets among others. Effective use of proofreading will be beneficial to professionals in criminal justice in that it will allow them to carefully go through a document to make sure that their contents are all correct, and make amendments when necessary (Gibbons & Farr, 1998). Prosecutors, for instance, must proofread the charge sheets in order to make sure that the defendant has been charged with the right crime. The role in the criminal justice system that I am interested in is that of the attorney. In this role, proofreading will be beneficial to me since by proofreading, I can identify errors such as a defect in the charge sheet that might cause my clients to be charged under the wrong section of the law or with the wrong criminal offense.
Taking Writing Seriously
This skill is of great importance to professionals in the criminal justice system as it allows them to have facts for future reference. It also allows the professionals to focus and understand clearly what is being said. Besides, it helps them in remembering the facts (Gibbons & Farr, 1998).
