Supply chain management can be viewed as a network of logistics systems as well as associated activities of the organizations, which are part of a particular supply chain. It stresses horizontal process coordination that cuts across conventional functions of warehouses in the company and necessitates association with customers, external vendors, transportation organizations, 3PLs as well as other companies in the supply chain. Since logistics serves to supply goods and services from the production point all the way to the customers, I have come to realize that it should not only be regarded as transportation of goods to the final destination. The course and the reading materials including Monczka, Handfield, Giunipero and Giunipero (2015) have made me learn that supply chain management or the system should be considered as the other half of marketing because the products pass through many processes and individuals adding value to the original product. Moreover, the distribution process acts as a marketing mechanism of its own because the goods at every phase of the supply chain must be rendered to the next person or organization that will pass then to the next.
All the process are essential as I have learned the course has made me understand that transportation is not the only factor that should be noted. Storage is vital as the produced products have to be stored for safety and; hence, ensuring that the goods to be transported to the customers are safe (Liu, 2012).
