The doughnut economics framework is a guide to the global economic system with social rights as the foundation and the planet's productive capacity as the limit. On the inside, there are social rights such as food, education, health, sanitation, and social support, access to energy, democracy, and housing. On the outer edge of the donut, is the ecological ceiling, which represents limits to the model, which is the earth’s capacity such as CO2 emissions and ecosystems that limit economic activities, while seeking to maintain a healthy society. There is an assumption that economies should be more inclusive where there is sustainable economic development without ignoring the ecological limit of the planet. The per capita boundary for CO2 emissions is 1.6 tons CO2 per year, yet it was estimated at 17.4 tons CO2 per year for Canada, way higher than Mexico’s CO2 emission at 4.5 tons CO2 per year (University of Leeds). Both countries have high CO2 emissions per capita, but more so for Canada. Similarly, Canada has higher phosphorus and nitrogen pollution at 14.4 kilograms P per year and 135 kilograms N per year respectively. The per capita for phosphorus is 0.9 kilograms P per year while for nitrogen is 8.9 kilograms N per year (the University of Leeds. Canada’s ecological footprint was 6.6 global hectares (gha) per year versus the per capita boundary of 1.7 global hectares (gha) per year. On the social indicators, Canada performed well except for equality and employment where 92.6% of the labor force is employed versus the threshold of 94 % (University of Leeds).
While the CO2 emissions, phosphorus, and nitrogen were above the set limits in Mexico, they were lower than Canada’s results. The blue water boundary is set at 574 cubic meters H2O per year and was 438 for Mexico, higher than 381 for Canada (University of Leeds).
